Had a little situation yesterday. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but I will tell you that it was a pretty close call.

Walden discovered jeggings.

It went like this:

3:47 pm: Walden and I enter Target. Happiness abounds.

3:52 pm: We find ourselves in the baby department (you'll want to remember this part for later).

3:55 pm: I spot something out of the corner of my eye. I pick it up. I am suspicious.

3:55:10 pm: I look around to make sure we are, in fact, in the baby department and not, in fact, in the Snookie department.

3:55:15 pm: I inspect pair of jeggings. Pair of jeggings has tag that says "Size: 9 mo." I am holding baby jeggings.

3:55:15 pm - 3:57 pm: I am incredulous.

3:57:05 pm: Walden grabs jeggings out of my hand. I am not quick.

3:57:07 pm: Walden and I have brief conversation about not being ready for this jelly.

3:57:20 pm: I help Walden with this concept by removing jeggings from her grasp.

3:57:21 pm: Happiness ceases to abound.

3:57:21 pm - 3:59 pm: World War III

3:59:01pm:

3:59:56 pm: I ask Walden if she even cares that everyone in Target now thinks that I'm buying a pair of jeggings. For my baby.

3:59:59 pm:

4:00 pm: I ascertain that the answer is "no."

Like I said before, crisis averted, but just barely. Thankfully, someone walked by and told Walden she was cute, so while she was posing for them and basking in their adoration, I did away with the jeggings without further incident.

But seriously...jeggings? For babies? I don't think I'm ready for that jelly.

While we are happy that Walden has mastered the art of wiggling like a deranged squirrel, we encourage her to find a more appropriate time and place to do it other than while diapers are being changed. As with diapering, Walden's attitude seemed to become more unpredictable in Q4. While she generally exhibits a positive attitude most of the time, when faced with certain challenges (such as getting her face wiped, getting hugged by the wrong parent or having bows put in her hair) she can become more...shall we say...aggressively vocal than we would prefer. While we appreciate that such willfulness is also an asset in many ways, we do recommend that Walden let her mama put bows in her hair, because that is what mamas do.

Summary: Walden is a valued member of the Scribner Team, and we have decided to renew her contract for the coming year and to promote her to the position of Toddler. Congratulations, Walden!

How long has it been? Two, maybe three months? You know, time flies when you're a Real Housewife of Fairfield County. Between living luxuriously and being fabulous, I simply haven't had the time to blog. Let's see...where to begin? There was the month we spent in St. Barts (pronounced sin BAAAHHTS, if you're wondering) and really, darling, preparing for a trip like that is nothing but work. The house manager must be notified, the staff must be organized, the couture must be packed...the sort of thing that no one wants to do, but someone has to make the sacrifice!

The next month was spent roughing it in our penthouse in the city. I know, I know...what's rough about a Central Park view and dinner every night at Jean Georges? Well, you try living in a mere 4,500 square feet and then tell me that you don't spend half your time in bed recovering from claustrophobia and the other half sending the house boy out for Xanax and oxygen imported from Switzerland. It's no picnic, darling, trust me.

And well, the rest of our time has been spent attending benefits for the poverty-stricken underbelly of Greenwich (those poor souls who make less than $250k, God bless them) and coordinating the expansion of the aforementioned penthouse. Oh, and we did make a quick jaunt over to London at the end of April for the wedding of some friends of ours (although I was terribly upset that a certain someone and I were wearing the same tiara. I know at least one stylist who is out of a job!)

So there you have it...all work and no play, as you can see. Such is the life of a Real Housewife...

I spend a lot of time documenting the goings-on of Walden's everyday life. I take pictures, I jot down notes in her baby book, I take videos...the usual stuff parents do to remember these precious days that go by way too quickly. I want to remember every single, little, tiny moment of her life and, consequently, I have about 2.6 million pictures stored on my computer (and that is just since Christmas). Do I go a bit overboard? Perhaps. Do I really need to keep every single picture I take, even the one where her eye is closed, her foot is blurry, and her nose could use a little housekeeping? Yes, absolutely, I do. Because those are important moments.

But what about parents? Who is there to document all the sweet little moments of a new parent's life? No one, that's who. And I'm fine with that, mostly. Because that would mean that I'd have to apply makeup on a regular basis and wear stuff that doesn't involve elastic and really I can't keep that kind of breakneck pace for more than a day or so. But sometimes I do wish that I had a picture of the times when James and I sneak into Walden's room while she's sleeping and stare and her and smile stupidly at each other. Or a video of the moment when I've rocked her to sleep and she's making little sleepy noises and I can kiss on her face over and over again and she doesn't even wake up. Moments that I just want to bottle up and save forever. Every once in a while, either James or I can grab the camera at just the right moment, like this...

...but it happens very rarely, especially since our girl is constantly on the move these days. I love pictures of moments like this because then, a long time from now, when Walden is 17 and she asks me if she can stay out past 7:30 just this once and I tell her no, that nothing good can happen at that ungodly hour, and she screams at me and runs to her room and slams the door and blasts an aged, 23 year old Justin Bieber on her iPod, I can flip through those precious, quiet little moments and remember when she used to need me to cuddle her every once in a while.

But thanks to the advances in technology, there are ways that we can recreate other special moments in our lives as new parents so that we can cherish them forever...

And then we realize why the show is called Teen Mom, with drama and babbydaddies and punching, and not Appropriately Aged Mom, which is pretty much a snoozefest and apparently involves James wearing a really tight green v-neck, which no one needs to see.

So let's just get back to the regularly scheduled programming and be thankful that there are no camera crews following me around...

The last few weeks of 2010 were pretty eventful over here in Walden's world...

we sported legwarmers (cue theme from flashdance)

we donned our gay apparel and posed in front of the Christmas tree

we got kissed under the mistletoe

we won staring contests with jake

we were totally unimpressed with santa

we were very impressed with grandpa fenton

we got toys from santa

we got hugs from aunt jennifer

we had our first snow day

And so far in 2011...

we had another round of Christmas with grammie and boompa

we were very serious about opening presents

and also very silly

we decided that lucy is more fun than presents

We were a little sad to see 2010 end; after all, it was The Year of the Butterbean! But we can't wait to see what 2011 holds. And plus, I have a feeling that every year from here on out will be the Year of the Butterbean :) Happy New Year, everybody!

Scams, Sleep, and Snowglobes

If I've learned anything in almost five months of parenthood, it is this:

Babies, though cute and infinitely lovable, are not to be trusted. Neverevernosireebobnotonebit. Nothing but con-artists, they are. Adorable, pudgy-faced, rosy-cheeked little con-artists. And they're good. Oh, they're real good. Take Walden, for instance. One minute I'm watching her do this whole heart-melting routine where she's making eyes at me from behind a teething ring and saying things like "aahh mmmm pppfff" - really laying it on thick, you know - and next thing I know I'm in a sweaty, confused and sleepless heap on the floor with tweety birds circling over my head.

She'll spend hours buttering me up with this move...

...but behind those innocent, blue eyes, she's hatching a complex plan to wake me up at least 12 times later that night. Or she'll turn on some Oscar-worthy waterworks during what is supposed to be sleepy time and as soon as I enter the room to soothe my distraught child, I am greeted by this...

And my heart melts all over again and I am caught up in her carefully crafted web of trickery.

Long story short, my super sleeper of yester-month has taken a few steps backward in the ol' shut-eye department. She turned 4 months old and poof...gone are the days of six, seven and eight hour stretches at night...we're back to a mere 3 to 4 (it's only temporary, please say it's only temporary). These are desperate times. And this is what happens when mama gets ~~on the internet while she is~~ desperate...

It's Baby Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit. I had to buy it. It had the word magic in the title. And it really is magic.

It magically makes your baby look ridiculous. Sleep? Not so much. Walden knows it and I know it, but still we hope.

I suppose being a parent is kind of like living in a snow globe. Just when things get all nice and settled, something (or someone) comes along to shake things up and send us flying. Plus, sometimes you feel like you're drowning while being hurled against rounded glass.

But, oh, isn't it beautiful...yes, it is.

One year ago today, we found out our little butterbean was on the way! Seems like only yesterday that James was telling me, "You know if that thing is positive, you can forget that bottle of cab you just bought" and I was telling him, "Impossible...trust me, I'll have purple lips within the hour."

Such a busy fall! First...Walden's first Halloween! The little diva had three costume changes (how very Cher of her).

The Friendly Skies

A couple of weeks ago, we flew down to Florida for the wedding of my dear friend Lauren. I won't say Walden's first flight was a total breeze, but it went SO much better than I had imagined in my very terrifying pre-flight nightmares. Walden was an angel, but there are just certain things that babies do that are more difficult to deal with when you're 30,000 feet up in the air. You see, Walden is a big fan of spitting up. I know this and I plan for it. The girl wears a bib even when she's not eating and we just pretend it's a lovely, chunky necklace. And we have hundreds, if not thousands, of burp cloths within arm's reach at all times. And if spitting up was all that we needed to worry about on our flight to Florida, then we would have been so prepared. So prepared! But spitting up is not what Walden did. What she did...well, no bib or burp cloth stood a chance. There we were, flying along through the air, peacefully and without a care in the world...

when a sleeping Walden opened those sweet, beautiful, blue eyes, looked up at her adoring mother and Linda Blair'd all over the place. And then went right back to sleep. Leaving me no choice but to sit there and soak it all in. What made this extra special was that this happened a mere 30 minutes into our 2.5 hour flight. Ah, yes.

There is also the matter of diaper changing. Walden declined my request that she 'hold it' until we arrived in Florida, so we were faced with the challenge of changing a diaper in a place that simply was not designed for such a thing. People don't really take kindly to having their already-pretty-rank cabin air further polluted, so changing her in the seat wasn't an option. But here's what I don't take kindly to: airplane lavatories. They are nasty and not a place I want my precious baby girl hanging out for any amount of time. But...and I still have a hard time talking about it...to the airplane lavatory she went. With James. I sent her with James. The man who has actually walked barefoot in one of these airplane bathrooms (fortunately for him, i had already married him). The man who thinks showers in hockey rink locker rooms count as real showers (they don't). The man who thinks the lyrics to "Every Breath You Take" include "I'm a pool hall ace" rather than "how my poor heart aches" (perhaps this is unrelated.) The point is, James is the least germ-conscious of the two of us and yet, because I was covered in baby puke and might have lost it if I'd added poop to the situation, I put her in his arms, armed him with disposable changing pads and watched them disappear to the back of the plane. And so, I sat in my seat and prayed. I prayed that the immunizations Walden had just gotten at the doctor included one for airplane bathroom disease and I prayed for forgiveness. According to James, "Everything went fine. I covered every surface and closed the toilet lid before I changed her on it." Thanks, James, for closing the lid first.

Other than that, things really did go pretty smoothly. And despite his questionable hygiene, James was a life-saver on this trip and I couldn't have done it without him ;) The weekend in Florida was absolutely flawless...the weather, the wedding, the beautiful couple...everything! The Way Life Should Be

Walden got to spend her two month birthday in Maine! Which means she also went on her first road trip. Which means that we went on our first road trip with two dogs and a baby which is about as simple as it sounds. I spent about three weeks preparing for this trip, agonizing over questions like, should we take the swing and the bouncy? Or just the swing? Or just the bouncy? (Answer: just the bouncy.) How many times will she poop while we're away? (Answer: not that many. Walden has travel anxiety just like...some other people in the family do.) Do we really need to pack the dogs' special hypoallergenic food or can we get away with non-special non-hypoallergenic food for a week? (Answer: no we cannot get away with non-special food. Jake makes that very clear and we couldn't deal with him making that clear for an entire week.) So we packed up our bouncies and diapers and special food and set out at 9 p.m. thinking that Walden would sleep the entire 5.5 hour trip. Except she didn't. So the trip was more like 7 hours, but who's counting? Good times were had, lobsters were eaten and Walden got her first whiff of ocean breeze.

Sweating to the Oldies

On Monday, I was finally cleared by my doc to start exercising again. The moment she gave me the 'ok,' my first thought was: "I am seriously about to go all Heidi Klum up in this piece [because that's how I talk now]. If she can be bikini-ready mere weeks after giving birth, then so can I!" My second thought was: "Jamie, you are delusional. Please get ahold of yourself immediately." In case it's not obvious (because apparently it wasn't to me at first), there is a vast array of differences between Heidi Klum and me. For starters, I don't know that I've ever been bikini-ready so...there's that. Also, unlike Ms. Klum, I gained more than 6 pounds during my pregnancy. Way more. Turns out keeping your own weight a secret from yourself during pregnancy ain't such a grand idea. I mean, ignorance is bliss at the all-you-can-fit-in-your-cup, pay by the pound fro-yo and topping buffet, but there comes a time when you have to face reality. And reality can be an ugly little bastard. The good news is, I'm only about 9 stomach viruses away from my goal weight.

As appealing as it sounds to let influenza do my bidding (because who doesn't just looove a good stomach bug?), I suppose I'll go about it the old fashioned way. I'll ride my sweet new bike, swim with my old lady friends at the JCC and hoof it through the neighborhood with my baby. It's less Heidi Klum and more Jane Fonda. Less of a Project MILF and more of a Project MILLAWG (Mom I'd just Like to Look At Without Gagging). Should be fun. Wish me luck.

Blast from the past...

When Walden was 10 days old, we had a sure-enough professional come to the house to take some pictures. Rebecca Murphy of Rebecca Murphy Photography was amazing and fun and she might as well be called The Baby Whisperer because, before she showed up, I was pretty sure I would have the only baby she'd ever photographed who would scream the entire time and refuse to do the cute little baby poses I'd seen on her website. But Rebecca knows exactly what she's doing and she had little Walden under her spell during the whole session. Seriously, Walden was putty in her hands. I'm thinking of inviting her over at 4 a.m. whenever I'm having a hard time getting baby back to sleep.

This is what happens when we try to do tummy time.

Girlfriend is tired. All. The. Time. Some people might hear this and say, "Wow, what a good, quiet little baby you have!" And they would be right. I do have a really good baby. But consider this: What if I'm just really boring? Or even worse, what if she's just not into the showtunes I sing to her all the day long and she'd simply rather stare at the back of her eyelids? Could I possibly have given birth to someone who doesn't feel the same way about Julie Andrews as I do? As Cinderella (played by the lovely Lesley Ann Warren circa 1965) would ~~say~~ sing, "Impossible!" I'm pretty sure she's just really tired....right?

In other news, Walden is officially out of her newborn size diapers. Unfortunately, she's not quite filling out her Size 1's either. This makes life very interesting for us because diapers are not an item of clothing that you want to be blousy. First of all, it does nothing for the figure. Second of all, things can get messy very quickly and unexpectedly. Like when you're...say...strolling through the greeting card section at Target. Here is my suggestion to the makers of Huggies: either make a plus size newborn diaper for those with a little more junk in the trunk or a slimmer size 1 for more delicate frames. Otherwise, I'll have to get out the duct tape.

Yesterday, Walden and I decided to ditch the snap up t-shirts she's been sporting most of the time and get a little dolled up for a photo shoot. She's still working on perfecting her fierceness but she's really got smiling with her eyes down pat. Here is some of her best work:

Three Weeks Old

Walden is three weeks old today! And she's weighing in around 9 lbs, so we're doing something right in the feeding department. According to her last doctor's visit, she's in the 97th percentile for height (22.5 inches), 50th percentile for weight and 25th percentile for head circumference. According to James, she's "long, lean and pinheaded." Thanks, James.

The most challenging thing so far is the sleep deprivation that comes with feeding Walden every 2-3 hours. Most days go like this:

Feed Walden; get her back to sleep; decide whether to eat, shower or sleep; choose sleep; close eyes; hear Walden crying because it's time for her to eat again; consider running into oncoming traffic.

Lather, rinse and repeat.

But we're getting through it. And now we're trying the bottle at night so that James can help with the feedings. Last night I got at least 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep, which is the most I've gotten since November 2009. For this reason, I love my husband twice, maybe three times, as much today as I did yesterday. :)

Walden spends so much time sleeping that I'm wondering when she found the time to beef up to 8 lbs in less than two weeks. Oh right...she finds the time every two to three hours. Bring on the chubby baby legs!

Case of the missing stump

Walden's belly button stump fell off which is great except that we can't find it. We've looked everywhere. It is nowhere to be found. We figure it is hiding out in one of three places:

Somewhere in the sofa cushions
Somewhere tangled up in James's chest hair
Somewhere inside one of the dogs

I love my baby girl past Heaven, but I have to admit that the whole belly button thing grosses me out a little bit. And now to think that it's just floating around randomly in the house...

One week old

On Tuesday, Walden will be a week old. Hard to believe seven whole days have passed since she came into the world. Even though I love watching her change and see new things every day, I'm a little bit sad that we're moving further and further from the wonderful day she was born. It would be nice to have a replay button (with the option to fast forward through a few of the more harrowing moments of that day, like the pot-hole filled ride to the hospital or when the reception lady made me sign about 100 papers all while having some serious contractions...good times).

Little Walden has had a busy first week. Here are a few things she's accomplished so far:

First time being licked by a dog. When we introduced Walden to Jake and Lucy, the pups were a little hesitant to approach her and sort of kept their distance for the first few hours she was home. All that has changed and now all they want to do is sit as close to her as possible and stare. They sneak in a few kisses here and there and Walden doesn't seem to mind.

First trip to Cracker Barrel. I didn't think we'd be taking her out to eat so soon after her birth, but the pull of the Barrel became too much for me to handle, so off we went. She was a little angel, but I think she had her eye on my turnip greens.

First time projectile pooping on someone. Newborns are small, but they are mighty. James had to learn the hard way that you have to get the new diaper on the scene immediately or bad things can happen. Rookie mistake.

First camping trip. Ok, not a real camping trip. But we have been camped out downstairs for the last couple of days since we lost all power on the second floor. Walden's been a real trooper. (As of a few of hours ago, we have power again and can move back into our bedrooms. Yay! Except why is our house choosing NOW to fall apart?)

So it's been an eventful week for all of us and we look forward to many more firsts for Walden. Some pictures from the past week...

Walden Nicole arrived three days early on Tuesday, July 20 at 11:21 p.m. She weighed in at 7 lbs, 6 oz and measured 20 inches long. We are so in love! We just keep staring at her and can't believe she's really ours.

The other day I was thinking that if I could have just one wish in these final days before bringing home a brand new baby, it would be for the bathroom upstairs to spring a leak and to soak through the downstairs ceiling.

And what do you know, my wish has been granted!

And here is Big Mama at 38 weeks....

39 weeks is coming up on Friday...we might have to get out the wide angle lens. This "pretty good sized baby" (doc's words) better get here soon! There's no more room at the inn.
